Cano, Antonio ( 1811-1897, Spain)
Cano, Antonio ( 1811-1897, Spain)
Monday, 3 November, 2008
Biography
Antonio Caro hailed from Lorca, a city in the province of Murcia.
Antonio's parents were from Vélez-Rubio as also were the parents of
Julián Arcas
.
He learned guitar as a pupil of
Dionisio Aguado
.
Antonio studied medicine and became a doctor in Madrid and was also a guitar teacher at the Madrid Conservatoire.
He was also official archivist to Queen Isabella the Second.
Later he gave up that profession as doctor and returned to Lorca to take up a career as a guitarist.
Antonio Cano composed about a hundred pieces and exercises for the guitar.
We are indebted to Cano for his guitar method published in 1852 and reprinted
in 1868 with an additional treatise on harmony adapted to the guitar.
It is probable that he gave lessons to
Francisco Tárrega
and contributed to the development of the technique of the tremolo.
He was popular in Spain where he often played duets with his son Frederico, and he toured Europe, playing in England in 1858.
