Garcia, Anthony Lamont
Garcia, Anthony Lamont
Wednesday, 27 August, 2008
Soulful guitarist composer Anthony Garcia continues to touch audiences with his unique ability to blend formality with colourful improvisatory flair. A highly trained classical musician well versed in styles such as jazz, Latin folk and popular music Anthony manages to bring together the threads of these genres to create an original and communicative soundscape of universal appeal.
Born in Houston, Texas, Anthony spent some years traveling with his family throughout South East Asia before moving to Brisbane, Australia where he began to study the classical guitar. During his teenage years Anthony developed a love for rock and jazz that saw him play in a number of Brisbane rock groups and jazz ensembles. Jazz offered Anthony the perfect outlet to further his innate desire to improvise. Being exposed to these different styles of music have helped shape Anthony’s unique ability to compose and perform on the classical guitar.
In 1999, after 10 years of formal study, culminating in a Masters Degree in Music Performance Anthony returned to Mexico, basing himself in Merida, Yucatan. During his four years as artist / teacher at La Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan he established and directed a university guitar orchestra, a yearly guitar festival and a monthly recital series. His love for improvisation and composition was further ignited during this time, absorbing the vibrancy of the Mexican people and their intrinsic love for music in day to day life.
Anthony returned to Australia in 2003 dedicated to forging his own creative path. The release in 2004 of his debut CD of original compositions “Skyflyer” led to highly successful tours throughout regional and metropolitan Australia. The title track Skyflyer reaching the Final 5 of the OZ Music Awards in the classical category. The subsequent release of his second CD in October 2006 “Malili Dreaming”, sees an evolution in style and expression that has held audiences spellbound. This powerful body of work is a true indication of Anthony’s maturity as a composer and clearly represents his oneness with the instrument. Released by Manjaro Music and distributed nationally through Creative Vibes, Malili Dreaming is a unique collection of emotive pieces that reflects the diverse background of Anthony’s life living in Australia, Indonesia, Singapore and Mexico.
2007 saw the premier of several new works composed for ensemble. Stories D’Aguilar, a four movement composition for strings and guitar inspired by the beauty and majesty of the D’Aguilar mountain ranges in Queensland was premiered in March at the Maleny Autumn Festival. Three Sketches for Guitar and Shakuhachi performed by renowned Shakuhachi (Japanese Bamboo Flute) master Riley Lee and Anthony, was premiered in July at the Caloundra Events Centre. The premier of Spring Nocturne, a duet for Guitar and Latin Harp, was performed by Anthony and Colombian Latin Harp virtuoso Sandra Real at the Tyalgum Music Festival in September. In October Anthony was selected as a showcase artist for the BIGSOUND music conference and was selected in the top 10 for the instrumental category of the Musicoz Awards held in December 2007.
2008 has seen Anthony back in the studio to record several new projects. The first release is the debut CD for Zarabanda, the exciting new ensemble Anthony has formed with Latin Harp virtuoso Sandra Real.
A dedicated educator Anthony continues to offer a broad range of workshops and lectures at universities, secondary schools and for the general public. His current workshop series One World One Music incorporates an open philosophy of music making utilising techniques from various traditions including classical, jazz and folk. This year Anthony joins the instrumental teaching staff at Creative Industries QUT, Brisbane.
Anthony currently resides in Brisbane, Australia with his wife Jennifer and two sons Gabriel and Ruben.
