Kueffner, Joseph (1776 - 1856, Germany)
Kueffner, Joseph (1776 - 1856, Germany)
Wednesday, 10 September, 2008
Joseph Kueffner was born March 31, 1776 in Wuerzburg.
His father, Wilhelm Kueffner, was the the leader of the Wuerzburg court orchestra.
When Joseph was 7 years old he began to learn the violin.
In 1791 he started to study philosophy and law.
He had his first concert as soloist in a "winter concert" with his violin in 1792.
In 1794 he started his musical education with "concertmaster" Lorenz Schmitt. Since 1797 Kueffner was a member as violinist with the Würzburg court orchestra.
In 1802, when Würzburg became part of Bavaria, he became bandmaster with a Bavarian Army regiment and was assigned to take charge of military music.
So he startet his compositions and arrangements for "Harmoniemusik", which were very well accepted.
Since 1804 he was again member of the Wuerzburg court orchestra but also he had his position as military bandmaster.
In 1814 the court orchester was closed and Kueffner was retired.
Since this time he only worked as composer. His "Harmoniemusik" became famous in France and the Netherlands. During several journeys in Paris and Bruxelles
he had personal distinctions. In this time he also wrote many pieces for guitar but also many trios for two instruments and guitar. It is unknown when and where he had his first contact with the guitar.
He composed seven symphonies, a quintet for flute and strings, (at least one) string quartet (his opus 178), a viola concerto, and a horn quintet (op. 66).
His live was very changeful and he often to fight for his survival.
He died at 9.9. 1856 in Wuerzburg.
Only some compositions for guitar, which are very easy and for beginners, are today in use.
